The Georgia Renaissance Festival
For a whole string of spring weekends, a 32-acre medieval English village—“Newcastle”—comes to life on the grounds of the Georgia Renaissance Festival in the small city of Fairburn. Newcastle comes populated with a whole cast of period-garbed characters, not to mention thousands of festivalgoers—many just as enthusiastically costumed as Middle Ages folk (and figures of fantasy).
This year’s edition of the Renaissance Festival kicked off on April 14th and runs through June 3rd, with Newcastle thrumming along each Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 AM to 6 PM.
From Fire-Breathing to Jousting
Newcastle’s 10 entertainment stages, 150-plus Artisan Marketplace shops, and various games and rides come scattered across its sprawling quarters, from the Queen’s Garden and the Royal Highlands to Olde Town.
Minstrels, jugglers, acrobats, sword-swallowers, jugglers, and all manner of other performers roam the grounds and share the stages with boisterous comedians, hypnotists, pirates, and falconers. The Joust Arena sees multiple thundering-hoofed knight-on-knight competitions each day: a definite must-see. Feasting at the Festival
All that spectacle would be enough to get into the medieval spirit even if the Georgia Renaissance Festival cuisine weren’t so period-evocative as well. We’re talking epic roast turkey legs, “Steaks-on-Stakes,” and the like, which you can wash down with mead, ale, wine, or hard cider (plus a thorough variety of non-alcoholic beverages).
